Things To Do
The possibilities are endless for having a good time in the upstate, but here are ten of our recommendations.
Trees Upstate
Trees Upstate is a friendly, Greenville-based nonprofit that’s all about planting, promoting, and protecting trees across the Upstate of South Carolina. They work with volunteers and community partners to bring more trees into parks, schools, and neighborhoods—especially in areas with less canopy—and help people understand why trees matter for cleaner air, cooler streets, and healthier communities. They also provide tree-care education, technical support, and programs that train folks in tree-related careers, making it easy to get involved and make a positive impact locally.
Sierra Club Upstate
Sierra Club Upstate is South Carolina’s chapter of the Sierra Club, America’s oldest and one of the largest grassroots environmental organizations. Rooted in the Sierra Club’s mission to explore, enjoy, and protect the natural world, this group brings that work to the Upstate through education, advocacy, community outings, and local campaigns that support clean air and water, protect wild places, and push for smarter, climate-friendly policies in the region. Whether it’s organizing hikes, hosting talks, or encouraging everyday people to speak up for nature, Sierra Club members in the Upstate help connect people with the outdoors and give them ways to make a difference for the environment.
Upstate SORBA
Upstate SORBA (Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association) is a grassroots group for people who love mountain biking and want to make trails better and more accessible across the Upstate. They bring riders together to build and maintain singletrack, organize group rides and work days, and partner with land managers to protect and expand trail access. Whether you’re new to off-road biking or a seasoned rider, Upstate SORBA is all about community, great trails, and keeping the outdoors fun and sustainable for everyone.
Foothills Paddling Club
Foothills Paddling Club is a community of paddling enthusiasts that’s all about getting out on the water and having fun, whether you’re in a kayak, canoe, raft, or on a stand-up paddleboard. They organize trips, clinics, and social events so members can build skills—from beginner basics to whitewater techniques—make new friends, and explore rivers and lakes across the Southeast. Along the way, the club also supports river cleanups and other conservation efforts that help keep local waterways healthy and enjoyable for everyone.
Carolina Climbers Coalition
Carolina Climbers Coalition is a climber-led nonprofit that works across the Carolinas to protect, preserve, and grow outdoor climbing for everyone. Since 1995, the group has helped keep crags open, partnered with land managers to expand and steward climbing areas, and even acquired and manages key climbing destinations so people can enjoy them long-term. They also organize volunteer stewardship, maintain anchors and trails, and bring the climbing community together around access, safety, and conservation of the places climbers love.
